The Big Question is: “What are Lab-Grown Diamonds?”
A lab-grown diamond is physically, chemically, and optically identical to an earth-mined natural diamond. Chemically, physically, and optically, it is completely identical to a natural diamond.
It is composed of pure carbon atoms arranged in a crystal lattice structure, boasting the exact same brilliance, fire, and durability (scoring a perfect 10 on the Mohs hardness scale). The difference is that a lab-grown diamond has been produced in a controlled laboratory environment and not mined from the earth.
They are not cubic zirconia (CZ), moissanite, or glass. Those are diamond simulants—entirely different materials that look different, wear down easily, and lack the optical brilliance of the real thing.
How are lab-grown diamonds created?
Mined diamonds form deep within the Earth’s mantle under extreme heat and pressure over billions of years. In a laboratory, scientists use advanced technology to replicate those exact cosmic conditions, shrinking the timeline down to just a few weeks.
There are two primary methods used to grow these gems:
- HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature): This method mimics the earth’s natural process. A tiny diamond "seed" is placed inside a heavy press alongside pure carbon. It is blasted with intense heat (over 2,200°F) and extreme pressure (1.5 million PSI) until the carbon melts and crystallizes around the seed, building a diamond.
- CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition): Think of this like advanced 3D printing. A diamond seed is placed in a vacuum chamber filled with carbon-rich gas (like methane). When heated, the gas breaks down into plasma, causing pure carbon atoms to rain down and stick to the seed, growing the diamond layer by layer.
Once the rough stone is grown via either method, it is handed over to master diamond cutters to be sliced, faceted, and polished using the exact same tools and techniques used for mined stones.
Debunking the Biggest Myths
Myth 1: They will fade, cloud, or lose their sparkle over time.
The Truth: Absolutely not. Because they are pure carbon, lab-grown diamonds score a perfect 10 on the Mohs hardness scale—making them the hardest known material on Earth. They will never fade, change colour, cloud up, or scratch from daily wear. The sparkle you buy today is the exact same sparkle your grandchildren will see.
Myth 2: They are all identical and mass-produced.
The Truth: You can't just press "print" and get a perfect diamond. Just like in nature, the laboratory process is unpredictable. Every lab stone grows with its own unique personality, variations, and internal traits. Some grow with flaws, while others grow incredibly clean.
Myth 3: They aren't officially certified.
The Truth: High-quality lab diamonds are independently evaluated and certified using the exact same standard as mined diamonds: The 4Cs (Cut, Clarity, Colour, and Carat weight). Reputable laboratories like the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and IGI (International Gemological Institute) issue official grading reports for lab stones, complete with laser-inscribed serial numbers on the diamond's girdle for authenticity.
